Auto Resize of Images

I'm sure this has been asked before....

Is there a way of automatically resizing a product image to a certain size?

At the moment I have one size for the product picture and a bigger size for more detail. I need to get some graphic work done and at the moment we are looking at amending 500 images. If I could display the main product picture at a certain size then I can greatly reduce the number of images I have.

You can do this on the fly by changing the img properties (or other methods) but the best way is to resize the image from the larger to the smaller using a batch resizing program. You can find many utilities to do this on the web. You should also optimise the file size and quality at the same time.

Surely you can just say display the product at this size?

It does it for best seller images etc...

Best Seller images displays the main product image squashed, thus increasing page load. If you have many images to change the best way is using software.

Ive created the thumbnails - I just thought I could reduce the product image size as this would basically be the same thing and therefore reduce my images. I'm sure the images would will scale down ok.

Problem I got is now I want to remove the background image from my pictures. I will have to pay to get the main files done and then recreate the thumb nails....

that's where Norman's code example comes in handy. It dynamically created an image of a different size for you. You can, with this code, have images of set sizes created. One of the user defined variables in Norman's code is to allow you to set the scaled width value of the resultant images.

If you have Photoshop this can be done using the Extract Filter or the Lasso and Magnetic Wand tools for example.
