    Ordering and server errors

Hi, I am having trouble with my site - if someone clicks to add a product to order I get the screen error, as per the first attachement file "bowraven-error.jpg - similarly, if you click on the product from the home page, although I solved this by putting in a specific url.

I spoke to my web server guys and this is their response:

"It seems there may be some corruption in the ca000730.pl file under the cgi-bin directory. Upon temporarily renaming the file with .bak appended to it, it resolves to another page without the internal server error. You will want to check the perl script for any updates it may need and let us know if you need any further assistance. Thank you."

I then decided to refresh the whole website and get the error per attachment bowraven-error-2. I get the same error if I try to update the site too. I have also tried deleting the acatalog directory and the contents on the cgi-bin directory and re-uploaded, but none of these worked and in the update process I still get the same error.

    My site is at www.bowraven.com

    Please help, thank you.

1 Has the site ever worked with this host ie UK2
2 Has UK2 made any changes to the server recently?
3 Have you changed any perl scripts?

Looking at the site it seems that none of the perl scripts are running, thus i would suspect permissions on the cgi-bin.

As you say a full purge and refresh should eliminate the problem as stemming from your pc, but points it to the server itself.

        So far

I have checked the permissions and these are correct.

        - the site has always been with UK2, I have posted your questions to them to see if they have changed or updated their files, I haven't changed any perl scripts and the site has been working just fine for ages.

Whilst waiting for help I tried to run the website set up and got the attached error when it got to the perl checking stage - which would imply something is wrong with the perl.

I have no idea what perl is - can anyone tell me please.

        Thank you, Russell

Perl is a programming language that Actinic uses to mainly manage the cart process.
When you host a site, there needs to be something (called a module) to translate the perl programming to something the server knows what to do with and to act upon.

There are version of the perl module that have problems with Actinic, like this one - http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=45172 so it might be an idea to find out what version of the Perl Mod they are using.

If the permissions are correct then i would say the problem is with your host and i know they will tell you they have not changed anything

As for UK2 support i dont hold much hope in you getting a sensible answer or the truth in my experience

                Host

Yes I agree with what you say about UK2 - their support is sometimes next to useless and I have already moved one of my companies and the website away from them for this reason - but so far they have been fine with this site and I don't think I chose them originally over price, I was recommended to UK2!

Any suggestions for a good hosting company - your input would be appreciated, although to move sites is always a real pain. Thank you.

it shouldnt be. If you have your domain lodged where you can change nameservers it can be quite straightforward.

1 sign up to new host, ask for instant alias network settings, upload site using alias, set up email on new host.

2 download orders from old host, suspend site (a dirty way to do this is change permission on cgi bin - use this if uploading site suspended takes alongtime)

                    3 change name servers

4 wait for propagation, re upload using network settings of real URL

You can do 1,2,3 before close of business one day, and 4 at open of business the next.

                      Problems

Hi - thank you for the update re hosting, I will think about the transfer.

In the interim I have the following error - UK2 transferred the site to another control panel and moved the site to other servers which has sorted the ordering, but I am having difficulty in setting up and get the attched error - any ideas. I have posted a question to UK2, but I would imagine they will say it is an Actinic problem!

you will need to ask UK2 what SMTP server to use and if its auth (ie requires user/password

                        have you already tried localhost?

                          Smtp

In the test area of Actinic in Advanced Network setup when I run the test using the SMTP setup as used before and I have tried using the SMTP of one of my other email accounts - both of which work with these settings on my email client, I get the error as per the attached file - any ideas. I am still awaiting the reply from UK2 as well - but their original reply was to check the settings as per my email client which they are exactly the same?

To update - I don't think this is a UK2 error, as I have now tried three separate SMTP accounts with different web hosts which all work for the email on those accounts, but do not work with Actinic - I have not changed any of my firewall settings from before so I don;t think it is this - I run AVG antivirus and I cannot see where the firewall is on this so not sure it has one. The router has a firewall, but this is only set to stop incomming traffic and not sure about my windows firewall - any ideas please?

The error 2 file is the one that the test finishes on if that helps and I have just checked my windows firewall and this was turned off.

                          Thank you, Russell
