Choices with Product Numbers

Hiya, I'm working on a site where often there are groups of products where the products in that group are just variations of each other eg different colours, but they all need to have their own product numbers. I read that you can do this using a component and referencing the various products in the permutations tab. But I don't want each of the variations to have a page of its own.

So how can I reference them without them appearing on the website in their own page? Could I just add them as normal products, then click "Hide on Web Site" and still be able to reference them in the permutations tab?

haha yes good point : ). But I guess I was also checking if people thought it was a good way to do it, as well as whether it would work or not. I don't wanna do something that works, but is considered bad practice, especially if there's a better way to do it...

But thanks a lot for the speedy reply, I'll continue plotting the site along those lines.
