    Automated snapshots possible?

Would it be possible to set Actinic to take automated snapshots say every night when the pc is idle?

I am not a techie so no scripts etc, just a simple solution would be ideal?

    anyone?

Not really. However a better solution would be to invest in some good backup software (I use Acronis True Image Home 2010). After you've made an initial full backup, it can be configured to automatically run incremental or differential backups of your entire system (or just selected folders) during the night.

That and a network attached drive with at least RAID 1 inside, located well away from the main system means it'll be quite hard to lose anything and you'll be able to go back to any days data if problems arise.

Your set of archived Site folders will be effectively a set of Snapshots.

      Thanks for the advice Norman,

Actually I have Acronis running already backing up onto a spare hard drive on the same pc on a weekly basis. On your advice though I may purchase an external raid1 network drive though , any recommendations/bargains ?

I just thought automated snapshots (as well) would be a simple solution for a quick restore rather than delving through the full drive backups.

I also use Acronis set to run daily at 3am (just before I get up ). You can easily restore single files if you want.

I use an Iomega StorCenter ix2 with 2 mirrored 1TB disks. I've just ordered a Buffalo LinkStation Duo 1.0TB with 2 x 500GB disks for a friends business but haven't installed it yet. Only £150 inc VAT from Saverstore.com.

The major advantage of an NAS is that it can be on a long ethernet cable and thus located out of harms way.

My daily differential backups run at 4AM (just after I finally get to bed) and only take 12 minutes. They're 3.5GB in size so there room for at least half a years worth before I have to prune the old ones.

I back up the sites and snapshots to an external hard drive. Acronis runs at 10pm every evening on to a second hard drive in my pc.

My external hard drive and internal with acronis backups are then backed up to a network drive.

Just in case, site folders and snapshots are then backed up online using mozy.

I also keep the site folder and a monthly snapshot on a computer 15 miles away.

That's you good enough for a 10 Megaton blast then. Should be OK.
