Speed Issues - Business & User

    Hi,

Editing product variations on our main Business Plus system, and Business User (even slower) is painfully slow, we are talking 40 secs on the main system, and 1 min+ on the user system.

It just seems to sit and do nothing ...

    And suggestions ?

(Yes I have compacted the database, Yes I have turned off previw)

    Version 9.

    Thanks.

You might have missing database keys, it might be worth contacting Actinic support to have them check your database.

I've done this now, and it seemed to speed up for a while, now we are back where we started, and I have checked the keys again which are fine

On further checking, it seems to be ok in bursts. So you can just move up and down the list of sections with the arrow keys for around 20 seconds, then everything will stop for 20 seconds ... etc. etc.

The network lights flash like hell as i am moving up and down the list for some reason too.

If I count 19 seconds and then click another section, i can catch it half loading the section details on the right, before it stops for 20 seconds.

So it seems that every 20 seconds I'm getting a 20 second lock

          ??

The other suspects I'd consider are:

              1. have you blocked external items from being locally viewable with a blockif? In particular the Google ads. (which opens another whole question of why they are there anyway).

              2. The Actinic cache could be getting in the way here. A search for 'slow cache' should find the appropriate thread. Or see http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=44629

There might be something in the knowledge base with more things to consider for slow response in actinic.

                Hi, Thanks for the info.

Would the external things such as google ads effect performance, even if the preview window is not loaded ?

Will have a go at the cache fix

I can't say for sure but I wouldn't be surprised if it does.

I suspect that there's a single cache responsible for prebuilding the web site and web pages. This is used to speed up displaying of the preview pages, the uploading process and presumably navigation through actinic when editing.

What I don't know is whether the cache pre-loads external items to speed up preview pages, even if the preview window is closed. I suspect it does which is why the blockifs are needed on external items such as the google ads, sharethis, etc.

                    Thanks for all the information.

I have applied all of the above, with success ! my faith in actinic restored.

The main problem was blockif'ing any external content.

Even javascripts for google analytics, adsense, liveperson live chat, addthis, bookmark share, and facebook like button code.

When I say blockif'ing I mean checking for preview mode (even if you don't use preview mode, or design).

The caching issue definately sped up the catalog editing, with no huge effect to uploading, or previewing.

I had a few missing primary keys also.

                    All the best.

I'm glad it's sorted. I've had similar problems in the past which is why I'm so familiar with the problems, their consequences and a few things worth trying to avoid them.

Even with the preview window disabled Actinic generates the P_Index.html and the Actnic.css files whenever you make a change, apply a change or even swap between sections. I have one site with a script which runs through the entire database to search for specific products and show - if I click on this accidentally it can take over 5 mins for Actinic to release itself

If you have any external calls these are indeed best disabled with the IsPreviewMode condition .... one swine to watch out for is the AddThis style of social bookmarking scripts - they can play havoc on loading times.

                          That's odd because mine doesn't (V9).

I've just made a text change, viewed in the preview window, moved around the sections a bit and there's been no new or updated files in my PreviewHTML, SiteHTML or DesignPreviewHTML folders. I've tried with the preview window open and closed but nothing like this happens for me.

To get actinic to create a new P_ file I had to view the page in external browser and even then it only created the preview file for the one page, not the P_Index file and no updated CSS file.

I wonder if what you're seeing is related to using dreamweaver or maybe having best sellers on the home page?
