zip code and st. error

Hi Guys
When a user is entering their address at checkout, they get an error if they abbreviate the Saint in a city name to St., which is very common.
Example: St. Helena, a city in California, will come back that the city and zip code are a mismatch and rejects the entry. If the redo spelling out SAINT, it works.
Can this be fixed?

Select Shipping Destination - UPS OnLineŽ Address Validation Tool error: The state or city does not match a known location with this zip code.

This is the ups address validation tool.

It appears not to like the period and comma as it works ok with "St Helena" but not with "St. Helena" or even "St, Helena"

No idea why this but you could always strip out the offending characters (., etc) using javascript.
