Downloading files to customers

Please help. I am trying to set up my site so that customers can buy a product and then receive supporting material (either pdf or powerpoint) as a download. I have been using the digital download option and browsing to the site directory, but the link that goes to the customer results in an error 500 message. I have checked that the relevant pdf is stored there. What am I doing wrong?

You might need to post a link to your site or submit a support request to actinic. I use digital downloads and it works fine for my site

Thanks for your reply. I can't see what I am doing wrong, but from reading other threads it seems that the problem is that Actinic adds code onto the link and then this is supposed to be taken off before the link goes to the customer. this is not happening. Is there a tick box somewhere I've missed to set this up?
