    Order processing without sharing databases

Hi guys, i'm looking into the logistics of how the day-to-day is going to go down once my new shop is launched and i'm not sure of the best way to do things. I'm going to be running the order processing from a machine in a fixed location and manage everything else (marketing, new products etc) from my latop.

What i'm wondering is how the orders work when they are received from my shop, if the order processing pc was out of date with what was available online would it have trouble with products ordered that weren't in it's database or is all the required info sent down with the order?

My laptop roams all over the place and I don't really want to set up a VPN since in combination with an external product database I get the feeling this would make any changes in actinic very slow to write to the database(s).

I found Actinet which I hoped could be a solution but the inability to complete orders and print invoices/packing lists unfortunately means it wouldn't be suitable.

Thanks Jan but i'm looking for a solution without having to use a VPN.

Hypothetical situation: you import an old site snapshot from several months ago, you hit retrieve orders and get the latest orders from your site, however there are order lines for products that have been added after this old snapshot. How would Actinic handle this?

One more question - if I import a snapshot from one pc onto another pc and only check the 'all orders' checkbox, is anything else imported from the snapshot or is it just the orders?

      Thanks, Rob

The order PC does not need an up to date snapshot, you will get an error message at the start of the download indicating the site has a different version to the PC but the PC is still able to download and process orders correctly, as all the necessary information is in the download.

If you select orders for a snapshot import you get orders and content. To update the design snapshot with current order data you must first update the order PC by importing the design snapshot but do not tick the orders box, this will update all the content and the design features, now make a snapshot on the order PC of the complete site and import that snapshot into the design PC. Main reason to do this would be to update marketing information.

Thanks ever so much Malcom, this is how I had it planned out in my head but hadn't tested retrieving orders on an outdated site copy.

Just out of curiosity what's the difference on a snapshot import between checking or not checking 'overwrite all contents'?

          Cheers, Rob

if you uncheck all the boxes prior to importing you will see another message saying that you will only be importing the design - no content or orders.

If you just want to bring new orders in, you can use the 'import orders' option on the file menu.
