I want to add a third party newsletter sign-up form to our site, ideally to show up at or near the top of the right sidebar and on every page. I've found bodge ways of doing it but I'd like to know how to do it properly, if anyone can help?!

The best way is to create new layout in the library called "Newsletter" with all your code in there.
In your Outer Layout for product and brochure pages add the new Newsletter layout into the design at the correct position. Upload and test. If you need to change anything edit the Newsletter layout. This will keep things neat and tidy.
