not show a sub-section list ?

How do I edit the 'Layout' tab of a section to not show a sub-section list ???
I've open up the tab in question, but cannot find any way of doing this!

I was trying to following instructions for displaying a compact layout of products with price and buy button, with a link to a proper description page (not a popup).

Under where is says 'Location and Arrangement of Section List' tick 'Override Default Settings' and then set 'List Placement' to 'None'.
