Customer editable text field in product

Hi,
I would like to have a customer editable text field in a product so the customer can enter notes at time of purchase.

I know there's 2 fields in the check out proccess, but it really needs to be done at a product level.

Can this be done and if so, how.

As usuall I've found it after searching these forums and digging about in the help files for ages, I gave up posted here and decided to crack on with some thing else.

It can be found in the 'layout' tab of a product, it's not quite what I was after but will serve the purpose.
