I have requested this before. Its incredibly awkward trying to search old orders based on a single name field, especially when the suffix is added in too, so you have to try under both M & B when looking for MR Brian Wilson.
In the end, its bad database practice - the firstname and surname should be stored accessible and searchable as too seperate fields.
Is there any reason why we have a single name field programmers?
In Design | Text | Web Site (cont) | Invoice Address, you'll see Name/Cardholder 5 lines down, with the unused field Job Title underneath it.
Tick the box next to Job Title, under the Show column, and make it required by ticking the box that appears under the Required column, if you wish. You can then rename Name/Cardholder to First Name and rename Job Title to Surname.

WIth both reports and Sage I think they will display job title on the line below the contact name - which won't look that good. For reports, you could talk to Jan Strassen at http://www.mole-end.biz/ who specialises in Actinic report customisation.
This also makes is very difficult to import a customer data base from any other program. I have a client right now that has given me his Outlook contact list in a comma delimited file. Do you know what I have to go through to add these existing customers to the data base. Outlook has a field that is called FullName which includes first, last, etc., but it does not export that field, what a bummer.
