I'll have another go at a digital download then. I think one recurring error was that it was expecting a line of code somewhere in the head tags which was missing... is there specialised dd scripting to go here?

I don't think there's any special scripting (although I'm not the expert here).

Certainly, DD should work out of the box with the templates unchanged.

Just for the record I am having the same problem with offering free shipping on gift vouchers. I expect I will have to embark on the DD workaround too.

Meanwhile this thread sparked off some thoughts on shipping anomalies:

        Shipping based on order value:
Actinic calculates the shipping cost based on the order value ex-VAT. But we charge P&P based on the total price including any taxes. Eg. Shipping on orders under £50 (inc VAT) is £3.95. Shipping on orders £50 (inc VAT) and over is £5.95 (inc VAT).
So this is set up in the shipping tables as Order value £42.55 - shipping rate £5.06.
The problem occurs when a customer orders £49-worth of books or anything which is zero-rated for VAT. The postage should be £3.95 but Actinic charges £5.95.
For the wishlist: Shipping calculated by total order value including any taxes.

        Non-standard products
We use shipping based on order value for most of our products. But we also stock a few heavy items for which we make an additional charge, and a few tiny items for which we charge less P&P. At the moment there is no way of dealing with this within Actinic, we have to phone the customer and let them know each time this happens - not brilliant customer service!
For the wishlist: To be able to have a specific shipping cost for an individual product, and for that product then to be excluded from the general shipping calculation for the whole order. The two costs then to be added together to come up with the correct shipping charge. I know it sounds complicated but would cover many circumstances like digital download, free postage and packing on special offers or certain items, extra delivery charges for heavy items, etc.
It's been suggested I use the Shipping by Weight as a workaround. Ie you enter the price into the weight field. You can then change the "weight" for some individual items.
There are two problems with this
        1) Every time a price changes, we have to manually update the "weight" too - and we are about to use SageLink for price changes so this would be spectacularly inconvenient and susceptible to error
        2) This doesn't work correctly with quantity discounts or special offers on multiple buys, where the order value goes down but the "weight" doesn't! The customer would then get charged too much shipping.

I'd just like to say as well that we've been using Actinic for several years and the support service has been great. Yes, the software can be frustrating to say the least, and yes, there are a lot of workarounds, but for the cost of the software I think it's a pretty good deal for a small company like us (with just one in-house designer/programmer/photographer/webmaster/make-the-tea-er and no budget for bespoke solutions!) I've always found the team really helpful and willing to try and find solutions to any individual problem. Thanks Actinic!
