Change Home Page to Catalog

Hello, does any one know how to change the home (index) page to the online catalog page? I want the users to see the online catalog page first rather then seeing the welcome page. I noticed that there is an option to use the home as the home page, but if I uncheck this and not use it as the home page nothing seems to change. I am sure this is more difficult then this. Thanks
