Coupons - basic question

This will probably seem obvious to most people, but I have to clarify this for a client... does a customer have to login in order to use a coupon code or can coupons work for all customers?

One of my clients wants to put a coupon code on flyers and adverts and wants customers to be able to buy from the store, without having to login, and get their advertised first-visit discount by entering the coupon code.

No login is required - you just enter the coupon wherever it is given a box - either in the cart, checkout or store pages.

There are ways of restricting them to specific customer groups if you did want to have login only but that's not what you need, by the sounds of it.
