Free shipping based on product type

Could you tell me if there is any way of organising free shipping by product type or group, rather than weights or quantity. We include shipping & VAT with some types of products but not others to be competitive. I have to assign spurious weights to some of my products (or zero to the free ones), in order to achieve this at the moment. Any ideas?

Use shipping by weight...

Set zero weight = 0.00 shipping cost

Set products with zero shipping to weight = 0.00 kg/lbs

This will not help if your purchaser adds a NON-FREE shipping item to their basket... but will give you free shipping on certain items.
