    Sending mail problems (screen freeze)

I have had Firewall problems for quite a long time and have only just finnished sorting it out.

Had CGI problems and sorted permisions and prots accordingly.

Just when I thought everything was back to normal... I tryed to send an order received / shipped e-mail and the screen froze....ctrl,alt,del...... actinic V5 (not responding) ?

now I run an advanced Network setup test.. the results are as follows:

The computer you specified as your mail server is not a valid mail (SMTP) server. Check the computer name or address and try again.

    Mail server messages:

    Connect Failed Connection timed out

The problem I cant get round is that the SMTP address is correct, so is the Url and the FTP details .... All correct.. and my company mail (same pop 3 account..etc) is sending mail fine...??????

Is this a problem that could be my permissions, settings, on actinic or on my firewall .... I just cant work it out... are there any tests I can do to locate the sorce of the prodlem!! (could it be an actinic internal glitch / problem?)

    Any help would be appreciated.

Actinic looked like it had frozed because it was waiting for a response from your mail server. It could be that your mail server has various anti-spam things on such as not allowing you to send mail via it unless you are connecting via the dial-up connection you purchased with the web-space. I have seen this a few times.

I own / have my own servers, and box that the site is on. but the computer I run my site from is not in the network e.g. at home.

So theoretically its not from connection problems because my outlook sends mail fine, and it uses the same SMTP mail account.

So af far as the anti-spam settings go...... I don't think I have any anti-spam settings on my pop3 (I shall find out for sure)

I have somone working on the servers that can track and locate things and he said :

I will investigate the mail on Tuesday. Intriguing, as the mail you have sent me (from outlook from your pop3 account) comes from the SMTP server on 212.74.13.177 (same as what ive got on my actinic settings on advanced network settings page) (bcmy.co.uk)!!!! Perhaps it may be something to do with the Actinic settings! Are you sending from within the Actinic application? Let me know.

        Kind regards, Jason

SO I shall check the Anti-spam settings and will post my findings Tuesday, appart from that any new ideas?

Another possibility is that your SMTP server will only accept outgoing mail if you've recently used the same IP address to read your POP mail (which requires you to authenticate yourself). As Outlook does a receive before send that may be why it works OK. You could test this by checking your mail via Outlook (or Outlook Express) on the Actinic machine and immediately after doing a Network Test
