I haven't seen any information on this, but as .net is non geo specific, I suspect it will appear in the non-country specific results and those of the country the site is hosted in.
bentleybloke : to be absolutely clear about google listings and the benefits of 1&1 . . . your package gives you 10 free .co.uk . . . so presumably if you have yourdomain.com you will also have (or can register) yourdomain.co.uk. If you put Actinic on the .com and the brochure pages on the .co.uk (or vice versa) and cross link the sites you will get the best of both worlds (at no extra cost). Either way, 1&1 SSL is a doddle to use and set up.
I have just moved from 1 & 1, if you are without need of tech support, there fine, otherwise don't bother. They really wern't that interested in helping me, so I left them.
The actual package is excellent with lots of server space, a really good control panel that is quite intuitive and the server seemed very quick. But as I say, the support was terrible.
We have 12 domains in our package. Support has always been most helpful and even when we needed direct help from Germany on a very complicated and unusual issue.
I know of two other people using 1&1 who also have have found everything to be more than satisfactory.
There will always be some who find it good and some who aren't satisfied.
This thread was about 1&1 SSL . . . it was hijacked into a debate about domain hosting and now is going into a general debate about different experiences with 1&1.
So, I say . . . !!< off topic >!! . . . Bentleybloke's queries have been answered. I suggest anyone wanting to discuss other issues should start a new thread specifically for that topic.
I do not think the country where a site is hosted makes a difference to search engine listings. A decent site giving search engine optimisation techniques is http://spider-food.net/
and the following thread from their forum might be helpful in this discussion http://forums.spider-food.net/index.php?showtopic=360
Claranet gave me major headaches when they moved offices last year. However, they seem to have recovered and they keep me posted. I must get an email every day from them warning of upgrades etc.
1&1 are much cheaper so tried a hobby site or two. Running Asp and access back end. After some fun and games I eventually managed to get them to set appropriate permissions. I could not do this. Roughly once a month they reset them so that the sites did not work. This caused problems but nothing like the problems they caused when they upgraded to IIS6 from 5. IIS does not allow mapping to parent paths so my asp pages could not access the databases in their secure directory. It took a month to identify and sort the problem. They have since improved their control panel - but their attitude remains the same.
You certainly get what you pay for - which is not a lot. Its fine for hobby sites - but if you need your site up and running for most months of the year - keep clear. I have never had any email from 1&1 warning me of an upgrade.
1 & 1 Internet were my first choice when choosing a webhost. Sadly they didn't make it past seven days before I cancelled the contract.
During that brief period the support staff contradicted each other numerous times via email and on the telephone.
No one was able to explain why I was being charged a registration fee on transferring a domain to them, when the name was still valid for two years.
Half the staff said I wouldn't be charged, the other half said I would!
The "no quibble refund policy" resulted in five phone calls and 15 emails from various members of their staff! The only way I could get them to leave me alone was to complain to the ASA. My complaint was upheld!
As 1&1 is the world's No. 1 web host they must be doing something right but I guess if you can't even post on topic you have to blame someone!
Posting about coffee etc. is disrespectful to others on this forum who may come to this thread for help with SSL etc. and what do they find . . . garbage posts!
This forum has always been really great with genuinely good responses and helpful members but lately it sems to be turning to ~spam~
I don't see anything other than helpful comments on this board, bentleyblokes original question was "Has anybody any experience of the 1&1 professional package?" and whilst the thread has roamed on and off topic I am sure he would rather have heard the comments before signing to 1&1.
I think it's great that people have taken their time to add their thoughts on 1&1 (good and bad) and this is exactly what makes this community great. Having had his other questions answered I hope bentley has now made a more informed choice.
Another off topic post <sigh> . . . read his post . . . he IS already a 1&1 customer so all this discussion of whether or not 1&1 is any good has no bearing on the thread or his question!
Can't see anything other than helpful comments you missed "coffee anyone" etc. ??????? then!
Hi all - I have got my moderation hat on I'm afraid.
I've found the discussions on 1&1 and on domain hosting really interesting, though I appreciate it is off topic from the original post. Normally it is better to start a new thread with separate issues, but that doesn't always happen - and it doesn't really do a great deal of harm for threads to meander, as long as the original question is answered (which it was - many thanks Tony).
Unfortunately, I have had to close this thread as I have received a complaint about some of the comments. I was wondering about removing the thread altogether, but then there is some quite useful stuff in here that might inform those looking at 1&1 in the future.
It's a shame to have to step in as a moderator, and it is very rare I have to do it as normally this forum has an excellent atmosphere.
If anyone wants to continue the discussion on Google and geography, please feel free to start a new thread.
