My computer went down again- had to restore-

this error appeared when I want to go into products (is this index.html)

The "404" is a standard error code generally for a missing file - your 404 page is simply modified by your web host. A site refresh should hopefully resolve the problem by uploading the missing / corrupt pages

Aha - just found the problem - the page is still there but you are linking to the wrong part fom the homepage.

The link should be to "http://www.abercairn.co.uk/acatalog/" and that will load the index.html file within the acatalog folder by default

The problem is the "View Products" link from the homepage at the top of the page - the link in the middle of the text works fine

Edit the homepage (index.html) and replace the link at the top

from

to

"href="http://www.abercairn.co.uk/acatalog/index.html"

Acatalog is the default folder where actinic stores all the product pages etc

Can I chip in here and pass on some important info about 404 pages, and how you can use them to help retrieve potential lost business.

We are all used to seeing a standard windows 404 error page, but did you know that you can design your own custom 404 page, and with a simple line of text in your htaccess file, deliver the custom page instead of the standard windows one?

So what can that do, and how can it help I hear you ask, has OWG lost the plot at last as Wales are playing England tomorrow on Cardiff

OK By designing a sitemap of the main sections of your site and saving it as a spare apage (eg 404.html), and by telling the server to deliver THIS page instead of the standard windows one, you WILL increase lost sales. Now instead of getting a simple windows,'sorry mate we havent got a clue what your looking for but it isn't here anyhow' message, you will get a nice page in your company colour scheme with the message, sorry the page you are looking for might have moved, or you might have mistyped the address, please have a look at the main sections below, or carry out a search within our site to find the best page for you. (obviously you need the facility to search if you are going to say this).

Hi Hilary,

this depends if you have designed the page using Actinic or another web editor such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver etc.

If it is Actinic you will find it in the Catalog section under "HOME" and will have the file name "index.html" - this should be at the very top of the product tree.

If you have used another editor then it may be strored anywhere on your computer but worth looking under "My Webs" as a starting point.

On a more serious note this is a fab idea I currently have a custom 404 that just redirects to my home page, this should look much better. Another thing to add to the 'to do list'

it can be a good idea to have a custom 404 page which says something like "

" Due to restructuring of this site You have entered on a page that no longer exsists

Please click here to go to our home page" and/or do a redirect after 10 seconds.

it can be confusing to be redirected to the index page without knowing why

Sorry I did not make my point clearly my curent 404 has a message saying

Thank you for visiting The Work Basket

The page you are looking for has moved or dose not exist

your browser should automaticaly redirect you to our home page in 5 seconds

if not click here
