Actinic v6 and Norton 2005 - pls help

    Hi,

    (using v6.14)

I was receiving the error message "Unable to connect to the FTP server The operation timed out" while updating my site.

The update process seemed to be sticking at the
"creating the remote directory structure" stage.

I then turned off Norton 2005 firewall (within Norton Internet Sec. 2005) and the upload worked fine.

I've never had this previously (with Norton 2005) - but maybe some Norton update has mucked things up.

Anyway...does anyone know of a way to enable site updates WITHOUT having to turn off the firewall? Are there specific ports I need to tell Norton to ignore? If anyone knows, please help. (I already have Actinic as a program which has full permissions)

    Cheers

You could try using passive ftp.

I'd also recommend upgrading to V6.1.5 as 6.1.4 was a bit buggy and didn't last very long as a release.

thanks... i tried passive - no difference.

Tried opening the ftp ports in Norton - no joy.

And it's worked before with Norton 2005's firewall on!

About the update - it scares me.....apart from this 6.14's working perfectly in every way for me -

does doing the update (with the patch) upset anything? Do i have to then re-configure things and other hassles?

      Cheers

        Hi there

The patch upgrade to 6.1.5 is fairly painless!

There were several bug fixes in 6.15.

You can download the patch from www.actinicdownloads.com/v6, then once that has downloaded, make sure you suspend ordering on your site, then wait for about half an hour and download any orders. Only then should you perform the upgrade, refresh your site and re-instate ordering.

Once you have upgraded to 6.1.5, there is a new option built into the software which you can try - if you go to Advanced | Network setup, and try checking Use Enhanced FTP - then try uploading.

        Hope that helps

Sorry if this is hijacking a post but I have just upgraded to 6.1.5 and Norton firewall will not allow a connection with the server. It works fine with firewall disabled and used to work with the old version of actinic. Help please as I don't like having to turn the firewall on and off all the time.

What messages are you getting when you try and upload/download?

Do these come from Actinic or Norton?

Can you check in your Norton Firewall configeration that Actinic is 'allowed' to connect to the internet.

when I hit download I get a windows popup labelled Developer with the following warning

A connection with the server could not be established.

Norton is configured as it was before the upgrade to 'allow all' for actinic.

It should work then if it is allowed in your Norton settings.

It must be something within Norton preventing Actinic to upload, I would suggest setting it up in Norton so that Actinic is not allowed, so that when you next try the upload, Norton will prompt you to confirm that you want Actinic to go ahead and connect, just say yes to allow it.

If the problem still happens, you should register an email support query here

                Hope that helps

I have been having a similar problem. I use 6.1.4 and Norton Antivirus 2005 with XP Home SP2. Claranet are my hosting service (I dont know if this makes any difference).

I would also get time out problems trying to use SmartFTP. Their support advises that the problem could be resolved by disabling Norton Internet Worm Protection. This worked for me and might be an answer to your problem. See the following:

                    http://www.smartftp.com/support/kb/index.php/58

If someone can let me know the Actinic program which does the file transfer I might be able to add it to the list of exclusions in Norton

It is usually listed in Norton as catalog.exe, just allow that.

I have tried excluding catalog.exe but that does not seem to work - I still have to disable Norton Internet Worm Protection to enable me to upload.
