Uploading/ FTP

I am able to access my site using a simple ftp program but when I try and upload from catalog 7 I get:

Unable to connect to the FTP server because the specified username or password is incorrect.

My password is then highlighted. I have double checked this a dozen times but cant get past this point.

Are there some files that should exist on the server before catalog can be uploaded?

Any help would be gratefully received.
