Gift Card/mesage Options

I am trying to offer a gift card and message service bought with a product. ie we will wrap and ship as a present.
Has anyone experience of this and what is the best way.
Can a customer enter data in a "product" ie message in a card?
Any help would be appreciated

Hi Edward,

I currently do this 2 ways depending on the product. In my gift section I use the "other info question" under "layout" against each product and enter the value "add your message" - this does make it a required field so I only use against products that are being sent as a gift.

As part of the main Act_Primary template I have hardcoded a link to a product called "message card" so people can add a seperate card from anywhere in the site as an option - this is set to zero value as we just use simple gift tags
