Flat file import error

Hello forum,

When importing a flat file I get the following error on a category details line,

"Line 17: Wrong number of fields. Expected 22 but got 4."

The bizare thing is that other identical lines import fine...

Any ideas?

Check you have no commas in the import file. If you upload it here or e-mail it I can have a look

Flat File Import Error

Make sure that the last column in your spreadsheet is completely filled with data. Move one of the columns in the spreadsheet that has data in every cell to the last column.

Hi Craig,

You are correct this does solve it. However the only column that has data for every entry is the "section text" field, which is really kind of useful to be at the beginning of the csv as it makes checking it much easier (in fact you cannot read it without this).

Any idea why this problem occurs - it used to be fine...

Flat File Import Problem

It has to do with the way Xcel saves the csv file. If you save the file in Xcel and then open the file in a text editor you can see that the comma is omitted in the last field if there is no data in it.

It is possible that tab delimited might work.

I added the Froogle Import Field to the last column in my spreadsheet as this has an entry for every section and product.

I am using Xcel 97 so this may have been fixed in later versions of Xcel.

Hello again,

So it has got even weirder now.

I have tried moving the section data to the bottom of the import csv and get the error. Not only that but now the last two sections in the list will not import description, image or filename.

Please can someone throw some light on this as I have tried so much to fix it and cant.....

Hi there

Without seeing a sample of the flat file, it makes this harder to find out what the problem is. Attach to this thread is a flat file i use for the design course we run here. I would suggest in comparing it to yours, it has the basic information, like section, product name, prices and stock information. If you get no joy, please could you attach a small sample of the flat file so we can see what the problem is.

Hi Nadeem & Gary,

I have just sent Gary the loaction for a download of this file (don't really want to post it here).

Nadeem if you can give me an email address or a way of cantacting you I have uploaded it to some web space.

It seems that Actinic is not reading in the problem sections and just keeps the data from the last import in place for the sections. I have tried the houskeeping option on the database and I am definately doing a 'replace' when I do an import.

Lots of commas in the file. You will need to remove these. We usually do a search/replace and replace them with -

Hi Gary,

My understanding is that commas are ok as long as the data is enclosed in quotes. By the way the products are importing fine it is simply some of the sections on the last few lines I am having problems with.

If you get a change to try to import it you should see that the "pumps & waterworks" section will not import any images, descriptions or page names.
