How To Transfer Catalog To New Computer System. Hellllllllpp!!!

My new super duper flat screen is wonderful. But how can I get my catalog and documents (inc 400 photos) transferred across?? The old system has internal zip and the new has cd. We have tried borrowing a cd writer and downloaded to a cd but the new system doesn't like it. Any ideas asap please??????

CD transfer should work. Normally you install the same release of Catalog and copy the entire Site1 folder over.

However you may find that all files transferred via a CD have "Read-Only" attribute set and that Actinic may fail to work properly because of this.

You will need to select all the files once they are on your hard disk, right click and choose Properties. If some of the files are read only the Read-Only attribute will have a grey tick. If all of them a fuill strength tick. To make them all read/write untick the Read Only attribute and OK out. Depending on the version of Windows you're using you may have to do this for each sub-folder as well.

You also need to go into Housekeeping / Security and copy over (copy and paste to a textfile) the settings there as these are held in the registry and not anywhere in Site1.

If that fails to work then you may have to invest in a LAN adapter (or two - depending on whether you new system has one built-in) and put your systems onto a network. This will give you greates flexibility assuming that your old system will stay in use.

Other solutions include Laplink (usually an oldish version available free on magazine covers) but the special cable will cost you as much as a LAN card.

A slightly cheaper & quicker way would be to simply plug the harddisk from your old machine, into your new machine. Then copy and paste the files from one disk to the other.
[make sure the old disk has the jumpers set to "cable select"]

Hi, I'm new to this forum and pretty computer thick.

I have the 'read only' situation and can't seem to clear the read only check box.

Let me just make sure that the recent facts are known in case this effects the solution.

OK, been running V7 for about 3 years on an old Windows XP system. Decided to swap it over to a Vista Laptop for mobility reasons. Couldn't load the old disk so checked with Actinic and was advised to download it from the website which was Vista compatible.

Downloaded no problem.

Never been able to screenshot so I copied all the files from Site 1 on the old XP system onto my external hard drive and pasted them into the Vista Laptop. No problems, whole site popped up fine on the laptop.

Tried to add images into the images file before I tried to upload for the first time but got the 'sorry, read only' message.

Tried the initial solutions above (box unchecking) but everytime I uncheck and then 'apply' the box comes up checked again as soon as I re-click on properties.

I have transferred the security encription accross from the old system to the new.

Pretty baffled, I guess that there is something pretty straight forward that I am not doing??

Please, if anyone is kind enough to answer, use really step by step talk because like I said at the start I am not very computer literate. I won't take offence.

Just wanted to make sure that it was clear that I have not yet uploaded from the laptop and both still have the same order/design/maintenance/network protocol boxes checked on the business settings options menu.

I wasn't sure if I have some sort of conflict situation going on between the two computers????

The only pass codes I used after the net download was the original pass key from the disk. Did I need another code??

It may be a clue that every time I try to open V7 from the icon on my desktop the laptop user account control asks me if it is ok to proceed???

As far as im aware, V7 is not compatible with vista, you might find turning UAC off will work, but IMHO you need to upgrade

Actinic V7.0.7 is Vista compliant (with a few known issues)

When you install Actinic on Vista make sure that during the installation Actinic installs the site folder (site1 etc) into your "Documents" folder. Do not fix or set the location to the old XP "c:\program files\actinic v7\sites" location, unless you are going to disable UAC and fiddle with Vista's permissions.

This will mean that if you are copying your images and site1 data across from XP to Vista it will be:
c:\Program Files\Actinic V7\Sites\Site1\ contents on XP machine
to
C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Actinic V7\Sites\Site1\ on Vista machine


A simpler way would be to make a snapshot on XP machine, transfer up to server via FTP, download snapshot from server on Vista machine and import into V7.0.7 on Vista machine.

Use a snapshot as gergus says and it should work - I've done it with v7 to vista many times.

I stand corrected, i had been led to believe it was not but then i was not aware v7.0.7 was around. Guess thats because i have not used it for a couple of years, sorry for the miss leading information

Mind you how can something be fully compliant yet have known issues?

Let me just clarify..if i am not using the snapshot method.

I assume that I first need to unload everything from my Vista machine and then reload Actinic V7 from the Actinic website.

When the program asks me where I want Actinic loaded I override the suggested Program Files location and select the Documents folder instead.

Then transfer the files from site1 over as before.

I am really sorry if I sound dense. I really appreciate the help.

You say you have never been able to snapshot, well this would say something is wrong so more than likely your problem.

The way you should really load on a new pc is via the snapshot, although other methods of copying files work its not 100%

I would suggest you contact support with regards the issue of not being able to create a snapshot 1st

Thank you for your response. However, what you have said has confused the issue even more.

The Actinic website is pretty clear. It suggests two ways of transferring files, one of which is the way I have described above. It doesn't say one is better than the other.

I have asked a specific question about one way they have suggested and you say it is 'wrong'.

Who is right, you or Actinic?

I am close to investing in V9 soon and I am now somewhat concerned that a 'bloke on a forum' who seems to be from his signature, a big fan of Actinic, is questioning their instructions.

I am, as you advised liaising with 'support' but I am very interested in your clarification as to why Actinic is wrong.
