.. enable me to see what has been ordered (ie. value of the orders) over a given period?

I have been asked to produce a site for friends business in return for a cut of the online sales and while I trust them to be honest, it would be best if there were a system whereby a total sales figure was generated automatically at the end of a month. They would be dealing with the processing of the orders at their end and I'd just have to update at regular intervals.
