Replicating a Master Product

I'm building a site to sell custom made spectacles. Each Product has about 15 different Attributes, some with very many Choices (30+). The issue is creating new products.
Ideally I'd like to call up a blank product, rename it as a new product, change the image and price,change a couple of the Attribute Choices then place it in a section.
I don't think I want to create a "Master Product" then Duplicate it and change relevant details to create a unique new product.
If I Copy an existing product, Paste it and change the name, I get a new Product reference but the layout goes pear-shaped on the test site.

What is the recommended way?

What is the recommended way?

Reading your description on the above i would recommend copying a product and pasting it. If there is an issue with the layout, then try creating a new product with a different layout template and see if the same happens? If it does not, then the issue is down to that layout template.
