I have a section on my site to get custom made mugs and mousemats after a user sends in the image. Is there anyway I can tweak actinic to allow the user to upload the image when they are purchasing the product ??

Yes. I've done this for a couple of sites. You'd need a PHP enabled server. You'd also need that PHP to have the GD library if you wanted to visually manipulate the uploaded images.
See http://fastframes.co.uk/acatalog/Gold_2530.html for a live site doing just this. [Site is currently buggy - you may have to refresh main page after uploading for something to happen]
It requires a bit of bespoke patching to pass the uploaded image file through the checkout and into the Order.Norman - www.drillpine.biz

upload files
Sure Solutions built an upload file tool that installs using php and has a administrative login peice so that files uploaded are associated to a correct order number. You can upload multiple files per order and the upload can be prompted from either the product page or checkout. The upload file too is well documented and works on several websites. To see how it works check out http://Sdtrophy.com. also works at http://teddyinatin.co.uk. you can purchase online from Suresolutions catalog http://suresolutionsinc.com
