I'm trying to get a cell background behind the search field and button. Why isn't it working?

The SIMPLESEARCH tag pulls in HTML from another template, for which that template contains table cells and information.

Go into Advanced | Template Manager | Searching tab and Simple Search button, which will reveal the table being used in that element, which is where I would think you will need to add your colour background or image additions.
