    Actinic Keys

    Hi all

    Just a quick question.

I hear that Actinic can tell if a key has been used on Catalog.

Is that because when you upload your site, it shows in the source?

Or does the software 'report' back to Actinic?

Its just that Iam thinking about buying a V7 off someone cheap and want to know if I use it and the software has been used, would it disable the site?

You have to be a little bit cautious if you are thinking about buyng a second-hand copy of Actinic. The license agreement says that the license is non-transferable without permission from Actinic. Can I suggest calling the Actinic Sales team on 0845 129 4800 to check where you stand.

Surely the licence applies to the software and not nec with the user.

If the person buys Actinic does not use it then sells it, then he has not used the licence, the licence has not been registered to anyone.

If a site has been put together but not made live on a server then the licence has not been used.

If the site had been used and traded then how can Actinic stop a second copy if that site is not on an Actinic server and on the persons own server?

If there is an Actinic 'crack' around how can the sites be made inoperable.

Debating whether a site can be made inoperable is a waste of time.

If you have a legally licensed version of actinic you're fine. If you don't actinic can find you and take whatever action they deem appropriate.

Only a fool would risk trying to set up an online business using an illegal version of software.

          Can you define 'legal' licence.

Surely with so many sites going live everyday, it would be impossible to check every Actinic site?

Every time someone uploads their site for the first time to a domain, we make a note of the domain and the key that was used. It then isn't too hard to do a search for duplicate key entries and look at what domains they are being used for.

So the software reports back to you with the key?

Does it matter how they track it? The important thing is that they do track it and they can tell if it's been used before.

As for the definition of 'legal' regarding actinic software? Actinic sells a non transferable license to use the software. On the rare occasion where someone has purchased the software but not used it, then actinic will sometimes (at their discretion as far as I know) allow that license to be re-registered to another person.

As to what happens if you get caught using an illegal version, I honestly don't know. I can tell you though that a quick letter to your host would have them shut down your website faster than you can say "I didn't know I was doing anything wrong, honest".

Why even think about taking the risk?

I am just curious that is all.

I purchased a sealed V5 and registered it to myself, but I also sold a copy of V4 that I had purchased via ebay. I never used it as I then bought V5.

Just wondering if the guy who bought it had any problems with it.

It is something you don't think about when you buy Actinic products. 'Big Brother' is watching every move you make.

Well done to Actinic, making their software secure.

I wont be asking anymore questions now.

                  Thanks for all your answers.
