choice dependant weight and shipping cost

I have 20 variations of the same item. the smallest weighs 3kg, the largest weighs 20kg, obviously I don't want to charge the same for shipping them both because i will loose money big time on one, or annoy the customer with a huge shipping charge on the smallest one...

Or, I could ask you nice people if you can think of a way in V6 Catalog that I can specify a different weight for each item and thus have it calculate the correct shipping for each.

I believe that for this to work you need to create a unique product for each variation and give it the correct weight.

Then you need to set up the component permutations so that they use the associated product as the component.
