Total postage rather than total of individual items

I'm using Catalog, and have an upper limit for USA airmail postage. I have now discovered that Catalog applies postage per item, then adds them all together. I would prefer to add all weights together first, then apply postage. Is this possible? I have ticked total weight and use default charge, but it applies this to each item, then adds them together! That way I got a postage of 3 x the default! Not what I meant to happen... Have I misunderstood something fundamental?

Actinic works they way you want. i.e. with postage calculated on the total weight of all items together.

You've probably made a mistake on your shipping table or components (if you use them). Hard to tell without further info or a test example.

Thanks for the reply Mike, but the default postage charge for "band not defined" is set to £10. The shipping table says 0.5 kg=£5.17, 2.00 kg=£10. "Don't allow excess" is ticked.

If you try to buy 3 lots of something largish eg 1000ml Baume St Michel (with weight set to 1.1 kg) , and ask for shipping to the USA, the shipping cost is £30, ie 3x£10. Surely 3 x 1.1 = 3.3, so the default postage charge should be invoked? Any idea where the mistake could be?

Have you got the "ship seperate" option ticked against the product details?

          No. Should it be ticked?

My understanding of the wording "ship seperate" is that each individual product will have its weight (& therefore postage) calculated - exactly what is happening on my site WITHOUT it ticked. Am I wrong?

Please clear this up for me...

No - it should not really be ticked in this instance as you say Actinic treats the items as if they are being shipped as seperate individual items and charges the shipping for that weight regardless of how many other items you add in - which would explain the error you are getting. If it is not ticked there is something else causing the problem.

If in your example you want the 3 x 1.1kg to charge out to £10.00 you need to tick the "Take highest value in table" box so anything over 2kg will be charged at £10.00. Use this carefully for shipping to the USA as people can add 100 items and you will only charge £10.00!

Thanks for that Jont, will tick take highest value box and see what difference it makes. Then, noting your sensible point, I will try the incrementing route to prevent mass purchases. Still worried why I'm getting the problem at all.

It's all academic at the moment as I cannot upload my site and am still waiting for support to help as I am really stuck but getting no solution (it's only been a month since I reported the problem...!)
