Updating Live site?

Hi,
If I need to add some content or change something on my live site and there are customers browsing/buying will this cause any problems for them, errors etc?

I read in one of the manuals that its best to suspend ordering, download orders and wait 30 mins - is that what everyone generally does?

My site is not live yet but I just want to check.

If someone is buying on the site it can erase their cart contents or cause errors if they are trying to swap pages.

I personally make sure all orders are downloaded and then upload at my least busy time for server activity (I will soemtimes check to see what session times are on the server) and keep fingers crossed
