    Hosting

I am just about to purchase Actinic 7 now that the trial period has expired but am looking for a good host. i keep looking at various hosting companies but feel to be going round in circles as there always appears to be a bad review(s). i think that alot of these views are from developers hosting a number of sites or using dedicated servers
Could anyone name a good host with minimal downtime and supports Actinic. i would prefere a relatively cheap host although reliability is the biggest issue.

The company i work for used to have a successful site although it was hosted by a small company and kept crashing, evenually the servers fel over and the site was down for about a month. a repeat of this would not be good.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

    At www.calmncomfy.co.uk we use Fasthosts.
They are very cheap and the hosting service has been very reliable since it has been up and running.
However I also purchased a broadband service from Fasthosts which took 2 months to get up and running. It was probably a bit of fasthosts & a bit of BT. Problem is, unless you are an expert they will try to blame the other. If you did want broadband with Fasthosts I advise you to buy their modem at the same time so they cannot blame the modem if there are any problems. They will not let you buy a modem later.

Also with fasthosts you would need a Linux package rather than Windows to run Actinic if you want a stable site.

Do a thorough search in these forums before committing yourself to Fasthosts!

There are several of us who are active in the forum who have vast experience in hosting Actinic sites, you could check us out.

There are also a load of cheap hosting companies who can host for you.

Essentially you get what you pay for - if you go cheap, at some time you will experience a short fall in service.

            Site Hosting

I can honestly recommend Phil at www.Infolinkelectronics.co.uk - email phil@infolinkelectronics.co.uk. Two or three years ago, I had an enormous problem over Easter when I tried updating from v4 to v5, and in desperation contacted a forum. Phil tried to help, and in fact I visited him on Easter Monday to sort it out. It was only later when I was chatting over emails, and stated that I was very unhappy with my host, and asked him who he used, that he admitted he was a host.

Since then he has been my "Knight in Shining Armour" at all times of the day and evening, and I unreservedly would recommend him to anyone.

He can also be contacted on 0121 458 4894

            Shirley.

I have used www.34sp.com for a number of years now and presently have three Actinic sites hosted by them. I have always found them to be helpful and at pretty good prices. Might be worth taking a look.

              Regards,

I use webfusion, now owned by Pipex, I've always used their Linux solutions and have had no trouble, they do SSL as well if you need it and as far as I can see their prices are competitive for the level of support and reliability I get.

I switched to Webfusion after enormous problems with 1&1 and I'm very happy with both the price and the service (there has been occasional downtime but its generally only a few minutes).

I also use WebFusion/123-reg.co.uk to host all my Actinic shops (7) and have had no problems at all - best of all they all rank well in the search engines, which I put down to the use of a good host.

Check out http://www.saffas.com, our set up took about an hour and they are very helpful, I just got an email upgrading our account (SUNDAY 10.27) from a person NOT a machine.

I want to set up SSL for the customer details page on the site, the credit card side of things is taken care of by HSBC.

                        Is this possible using webfusion?

If you want to use SSL for the checkout, then you can turn this on in 'Business Settings | Payment & Security'.

What you need to find out from Web Fusion is whether you can use https URLs for your current cgi-bin and acatalog folders, or whether the SSL versions of these folders will need to be on a different web server.

You can then use the the instructions in 'Putting the Store Online > Correct SSL Configuration' in the main help to help you enter the correct settings in Advanced | Network Setup.

                            Hosting Companies

I know this is quite an old thread and no doubt the original poster has sorted their hosting, but I thought I would put my 2 pennysworth
I use Open Hosting and find them very helpful indeed. They supply Linux as well as Windows based hosting, you have to ask for it as it isn't advertised on their site. They also have a very lively & helpful forum.
Their support is very good as well and have gone out of their way to sort any problems I have had - superstars! I would reccomend them.
