    Offline preview

    Hi,
My offline preview in catalog v6 seems to have taken a dive. I used to be able to do 'CTRL A' and get a preview of any page within about 5 seconds. For some reason catalog now hangs for about 50 seconds before producing the preview. The title bar says "not responding" while it's in this state. There's no hard-disk activity during this period. I've tried switching the default viewer to notepad incase it's was something to do with my browser settings but it does the same with notepad.

When the preview finally arrives it's fine but having to wait nearly a minute for it is infuriating.

    Any suggestions?

Definitely want to switch your default viewer back to a browser. Notepad will open itself and then open an IE session inside Notepad, so this is definitely not going to improve things.

What operating system are you using? When was the last time you defragmented your hard drive? Have you recently added OR changed your firewall/anti-virus/spyware?

I'm using XP Service Pack 2. My antivirus (mcafee) did perform an update this morning but if I disable it the problem is still there.

Haven't defraged in a while... will do this now.

      Thanks

Am also on XP SP2, so can rule that out. I don't know why, and I can't find anything in search, but I have a nagging feeling that someone else solved a similar problem by doing a housekeeping | Compact Databases and ticking both boxes.

Knowing how reliable Access is, and how well M$ products cooperate - it's probably worth a try - while you do that, I will keep looking.

              McAfee Virus Scan

Have found that my virus scan left ActiveShield on when I thought i'd shut it down. The problem is caused by the update to my virus scanner. It's McAfee Virus Scan and I just did an update to version 10.0.21.

If I kill ActiveShield my preview comes up within 3 seconds. With the new version of ActiveShield running preview takes 60 seconds.

Is anyone else using McAfee Virus Scan?

Have posted on McAfee forum. Hopefully someone will come up with a fix..

              Thanks for your help.

                did you find a solution?

i am experiencing the same problem, after upgrading to version 8,
did you ever solve the problem?

have gone back to using the older mcafee version but obviously not an ideal solution!

have looked at your thread on the mcafee forum, but seem to end without a solution.

                  Hi Lionel.

                  Still no fix.

Have upgraded my catalog using latest patch (for V6) as suggested by Actinic but to no avail.

I'm still putting up with waiting for ages for each preview. If I disable McAfee 'Activeshield' I get my preview within 3 seconds. With Activeshield enabled I sit there for nearly 60 seconds.

Somewhere between Actinic and McAfee there must be a fix but no-one seems to want to look into it...

I do not have McAfee on my system and so have not been able to check this. I have however asked our development team to take a look at this issue and will keep you updated with their feedback.

                    Kind regards,

I have McAfee and have no problems but I have some non default settings. You could check and see that you don't have 'When reading from disk' checked under Detection. You could also try excluding McAfee active checking on file type mdb to see if that makes a difference (although mine isn't excluded).

                        Hi Duncan.
I don't appear to have that option. I'm using McAfee VirusScan 10.0.27. Which version are you using and where is that option?

I'm running McAfee Enterprise VirusScan 8.0.0 but all other versions I've seen can also be configured to only active scan on write instead of read as well as configure exclusions.

If I right click on the system tray icon and select 'On-Access Scan...' then 'All Processes' - Detection I can change these settings.

My version doesn't have anything like those options.

If I right-click my sys tray icon I get 'Virus Scan' then 'Options' and then 3 checkboxes:

                            - Start Activeshield when windows starts
                            - Scan email and attachments
                            - Scan inbound unstant message attachments

There's also an advanced button that give me further options:

                            - Scan for new unknown viruses
                            - Scan all files or program files only

...but nothing as low level as you've described for your version.
