It does seem your version is quite limited in what you can do. It does say in the user guide on the McAfee site that under Advanced you can select either 'All Files' or 'Programs and Docs..' have you tried this to see if it helps?

Yes. If I select 'Program Files only' and tell it to not scan for unknown viruses the delay is reduced to about 30 seconds. An improvement, but still too long to sit and wait for a page preview. Prior to version 10.0.21 of VirusScan there was no (noticeable) delay at all.

I think you should contact McAfee support as well - perhaps you backtrack or uninstall/re-install to get the older version back again in the meantime.
