    cannot connect to ftp server

Everythings been going well since my last panic on here......until now (Why do things always start to wrong on a Friday?) OK, I am uploading, and getting this error:
Unable to connect to the FTP server "ftp.xxxxxxxxxxxxx.co.uk". The FTP session was terminated

After a few tries, I managed to upload the site last night, but it took about 2 hours instead of the usual 10 mins. Today, it is an impossible task.

I looked in the knowledge base, and it only suggests that I have IE set to work offline. I have tried to refresh the site, and I have tried deleting/replacing the base files. I have tried ticking/unticking the enhanced ftp and ignore passive errors boxes to no avail.

Just in case it helps, I am on a wireless laptop, using a netgear router with MTU settings at 1500.

Quite possibly an ISP or network error rather than something you are or are not doing. May be heavy traffic or maintenance work slowing things down.

I also experienced difficulties connecting to several of my sites (on different hosts) yesterday but all is flying along as usual today. Does your web host have a network status in your admin area to let you know if they are experiencing problems?

You can try using and tweaking the enhanced and passive FTP transfers in Advanced | Network Setup if these are not already checked

As strange as it may sound, sometimes conducting the Web | Configure Website details and leaving the checkboxes 'unchecked' to retain the current settings and effectively just running through what is already in the settings does the trick with strange FTP connection issues.

Nothing to lose by giving it a quick try

          By George!!

JonT, Looks like your first guess was correct- Probably ISP/Host problem as I went back for another go some hours later and it was all OK.

George, you are correct, was the claranet server a problem today?

For my sins I use Claranet too. You will get used to their small blips from time to time, trust me. There have been little instances of this over the last week or so, I'm sure it'll be sorted soon enough. Best to leave it (for a short time)when it happens, you just shorten your lifespan continually trying to upload.

No need to tamper with settings or anything, btw. I'd also guess that you cannot do a network settings test anyway.

Just to echo George (my fellow Claranet sufferer <g>), servers appear to be playing up this weekend.
I've given up upload this Sunday and will retry Monday

A quick glance over the stats indicates there have been problems July 25-27 and Aug 1st and 5th, when hardly any traffic reported, yet checvking server status page isn't showing any faults or maintenance specific to clarahost.

May be worth a call to support if things aren't up to speed tomorrow.
