Product Template Alternation

For a new site, we want the layout of products to alternate as the viewer scrolls down the page. For example, we want the first product to have its image to the left, and information to the right. The second is the reverse of this, alternating down the page.

So far there are two templates set up, manually assigned to the products. The problem with this is as soon as one product is out of stock or a new one is added, the layouts must be reassigned to maintain the correct pattern.

I cant see a feature to do this within Actinic, but can someone confirm this? Or does anyone have an idea how I could otherwise achieve the effect?

Seem to recall it is possible to create a combined ACT_Product template with the first half being image left and then a second with image right so Actinic will populate the template alternatively from the top down even if you delete or hide a product in that section - cant remember where I saw that tip though - may be worth searching on here
