    Yahoo directory

I have spent the last few days reading up on search engines and doing the free submission thing. I have also registered with the open directory.

Most available information recommended spending the $300 on Yahoo directory registration. This it seems is now only available through the US portal.

It would appear that hardly anyone in my sector is on the directory but that does not stop them getting on the front page of Yahoo.

How helpful is being on the directory and given that my site is UK and Ireland
only would regestering throug the US portal be effective on the UK and Ireland Yahoo search.
    Graham

Graham, you can still make a free submission to Yahoo Directory from within the Category you find most appropriate for your site.

The good news portion of this change is that it appears the US option has changed from a recurring annual fee of $199 to a one-off fee of $299, which compares very well with the historical UK submittal fee,

It tells me that any commercial site needs to go through the paid only business section. Is it possibe to get a shop site in through the free listing?

Where have you found reference to $199 one off fee?

All I come across is $299 with an annual review fee of the same.

        Just a note on coincidence.

I've just noticed your name. My father's was Arthur William John Campbell.

I thought I was never going to find it again

I can't say the 'no commercial sites' was not there yesterday, but I can say I missed it if it was.

That takes me to the login page. when I log in and click continue I get the submit opening page which contains this:

"For web sites that do not feature adult content or services, the Yahoo! Directory Submit service costs US$299 (nonrefundable) for each Directory listing that is submitted. Furthermore, for each listing accepted into the Directory, there is a recurring annual fee of US$299 to maintain the listing in the Directory for the subsequent year. For sites that include adult content or services, the nonrefundable initial fee is US$600 and the recurring annual fee is US$600."

My father was William Hendry Campbell. My son is William Joshua, but he prefers to be known as Josh. Family roots are in Moray for the last four generations and Cawdor before that.

Hmm - I would consider that false advertising, but it's a US site and they tend to get away with false representation like that. I would question whether Yahoo Directory is value for money with recurring charges - I don't think I would have submitted under these circumstances..

Once again we see an American Company prove that all that matters to them is getting your money (and as much of it as they think they can force you to part with). How to win friends and influence people - NOT.

He (my father) was very much into the family tree stuff and managed to trace our latest connection north of the border to mid 18th century. After that its all in England. The early stuff was, as I seem to remember in and around Oban.

                  Anyway, back to Yahoo,

Does it help that much for a new site?

I have to say that is a decision only you can make. I currently get 49% of my visitors from Google search, 49% from MSN Search and 0.9% from Yahoo Search.

I have entries in about 23 directories and again Yahoo Directory accounts for about 5 UK and 3 US visitors, with the best performer glassontheweb sending 32 visitors and ukdirectory and ask each sending 12.

I paid my money for Yahoo Directory in the second week February (just before they stopped UK submittals as it turns out) and joined glassontheweb 29th May. glassontheweb was a free link.
