images on front page and subsequent pages

Hi,

In my site I will have 9 sections, but each section will have many (10-20)
subsections.

Therefore I want the images for the sections to be laid out
in 3 rows and 3 columns on the opening page. However I want to have smaller images on the subsection pages, with 4 columns, (i.e. 4 images) per row. Is this possible to do this by editing the templates? Or am i better off just hard-coding the front page of the website with images etc on it?

If you hard code the front page then whatever mods or upgrades come along your work will be safe and futureproof
