Grey is not Black

ok, just started a new site, based on the clean layout02 theme, starting with default colours.

But, I have the following problem -

I set Pallette colour 2 (the top bar) to black and pallette colour 3 (the left bar) to black.

However, although both are set to black, in reality the top bar is black and the left bar is darkish grey. How do I get them both to be black?

it seems that the left bar is a mixture of the top and the main colours (black and white) - hence grey.

Have hardcoded as a fix...
