is it possible to rename the folder acatalog? so that the folder name doesn't appear as 'acatalog' in the browser?

You need to do this within the access databases directly.
Go into the ActinicCatalog.mdb file and open the Setup 2 table. Within it change all references from acatalog to the name you want to use for the folder.
Points to note with this operation:
You can no longer make any changes within the Network Configurations dialog as it will restore the acatalog naming. Also, you will need to manually change the folder name on the server hosting what was the acatalog folder and last of all, you may need to delete all of the 000000x.pl files from the cgi-bin prior to updating the site to reflect the changes as for some reason some of the files retain the old acatalog info.
BTW: Make a backup of the mdb file first just incase you hit problems...
