Help - Getcartitems sometimes displays items when the cart is empty

Hi - under some circumstances (and I'm still trying to see what the pattern is) I will open up my browser to a site I have under construction which displays "Getcartitems 1 & 3".

Getcartitems displays that there are items in my cart (which I assume are from a previous session).

When I click to display my cart, the cart is empty. I then click on "continue Shopping" and Getcartitems now displays that there are no items in the cart.

Does anyone know why this is happening. I have read several threads on this board but I am not sure which, if any, apply.
