    General Script Error- help!

Hi, firstly thanks to everyone who has unknowingly helped me in the past with your informative answers! I'm tearing my hair out here- I need your help again.
I've built a site using Developer V7 (purchased last week) and uploaded it to my names.co./simply.com server which I believe is a Linux server. I've had several problems with cgi-bin locations which I've solved and have finally achieved a successful network test.
I load the site and according to the wizard it all uploads ok- I was having file merge errors but seem to have resolve these. However when I go to view the site (fairygoodies.co.uk) I see the homepage, but none of the links work and I get the error message
"Error: Error opening configuration file ../acatalog/prompt.fil. No such file or directory".
I can reach the sections using the address /fairygoodies/acatalog and typing fairygoodies.co.uk/acatalog/prompt.fil into my browser brings up files.
I've built another site using Catalog which has been fine for over a year.
I'm a learner and my knowledge of scripts etc is sketchy- can anyone help?
    thanks in advance!
    Ben

You definitely have a cgi-bin permissions problem. Once on the Catalog page (by typing the acatalog/ onto the end of the URL, then the top links which do not go through cgi-bin work fine, but search and the side links, which do go through cgi-bin fail with a not authorised error.

What is the permission on cgi-bin folder and on the individual files inside it?

        script problem

Hi- I've just rechecked all permissions and both the cgi and individual file permissions are set at 755, which I'm sure I'd changed- can you advise what the correct ones should be?
        Thanks,
        Ben

          update...

I've another Actinic site using the same host (names.co) so I tried exactly replicating the file structure and paths, but still no success. Anyone else got any ideas? This is a great commercial opportunity- the next site will be selling hair pulled out from stressed webmasters!

I've just made a purchase on the site... test test etc

I think you should clear the cache of your browsers

              or am I missing something?

                Thanks Jo,
I ftp'd the cgi scripts into the cgi-bin from the local drive- it seems to work but I can't figure why... fingers crossed it stays this way! Any advice welcome, it's a steep learning curve.

Jo- I've something seriously wrong. I've recieved the order you placed, no problem. However, on my other site, Fairyglass, I have also recieved a test order identical except for the product. I can't believe someone else has simultaneously tested the other website- therefore unless you also know of my other site, how is it possible that somehow information is transferring between two domains? I've checked and the settings for each domain are entirely different. Help!!!

I still have the same problem - nothing which goes via cgi-bin is working.

Woops - the first order i placed was on http://www.fairyglass.co.uk/

I have now placed an order on http://www.fairygoodies.co.uk/

the lefthand nav seems fine to me

I suggest you post the network settings for both sites

                      excluding username and password

Thanks Bill & Jo, it all seems ok although I can't understand why! My network settings are:
                          Catalog URL: http://www.fairygoodies.co.uk/acatalog/
                          cgi-bin url:http://www.fairygoodies.co.uk/cgi-bin/
                          codebase: ./
path from cgi-bin to acatalog directory: ../acatalog/
                          server host: ftp.fairygoodies.co.uk
                          username: xxxxxxx
                          path to cgi-bin: /web/cgi-bin/
                          cgi script number 36
                          smtp server: localhost
path to the Perl Shell: /usr/bin/perl

                          permissions set to the following:
                          acatalog 775
                          web 775
in the web folder I have:
                          acatalog 777
cgi-bin 755 inc. all files in it.

these are basically the same settings that my other site, Fairyglass, uses, but obviously changing domain names- the folders on the site mirror the Fairyglass hierarchy (if this is the correct word!)

If anyone can help with why the site now works, I'd love to know, as it would help me learn and stop wasting everyone's valuable time.
                          Thanks again,
                          Ben

                            Hi,

Honestly dont have an answer as to why your sites ar working now when they were not earlier, but can confirm that all is definately well up there.

There could have been several reasons for this happening, corrupted scripts or a temporary snag on the server, from the looks of things, the permissions on the cgi-bin were the main issue, or as said earlier, just a corruption on the scripts that you fixed by uploading scripts to the bin via FTP.

                            Kind regards,
                            Bruce King
