A General Script Error Occurred

My site (sulis.co.uk) has been running fine for the last 18 months or so using actinic V7- this week there has been some problems of reliabilty with the server, suddenly whilst the home page loads, non of the links work giving the following:

A General Script Error Occurred

I have spoken to the site host who says the server is OK at the moment and the file is there and looks OK, but is throwing up the error. Any ideas as to what has gone wrong and how to correct it?

If nothing has changed from the server supplier then may be worth doing a purge and refresh of the site (if not done already) to get all the scripts back up correctly again.

I tried a refresh which failed. so I have used ftp to delete all the files in acatalog folder (could not find a purge in catalog). Tried refresh again, this time catalog does not do anything- seems to be stuck. also if I test under network set up, it does not like my smtp server despite it being correct (works fine on eudora). I understood this only to affect emails, and not the site upload-

Eudora works from your desktop PC. Actinic sends its mail from your server. You need to set the correct details for your web host provided email. If you don't know what that is, you could try 'localhost' without the quotes.

If that does not work, tell us who the host is, someone will probably be familiar with them.
