ie5 cookie issue COOKIEERROR

I add to basket > it shows the contents of 1 item > and the basket page changes to COOKIEERROR display. Its like it bounces within approx a second

details:
ie 5 - evolt download so you can run ie5 and ie6 on the same system
os - xppro sp2
cookie setting - security enabled

works fine in ff and ie6

Any pointers as to why this might be happenig?

I Think I'm screwed

I follwed the instructions here for setting cookie settings here:

Reset custom settings allways resets itself back to medium when I restart form cold

Did you click on OK and then Apply, before restarting the system and checking t see if the changes have taken effect. Sorry to have to ask the question but why the bother with IE5? Most people have the latest versions of IE and since it works on v6 there should not be an issue with cookie handling.
