That messy code is natural to actinic and stripping it out will only lead to further problems down the line as bill suggests. Get the basics done first -

Much in line with what everyone has said.....
with "out of the box" Actinic websites performing very well on the search engines you should possibly be expending your energy on other ways of marketing, promoting and selling your products instead of "fighting" with META tags that have not been detrimental to many, many other successful Actinic stores.
If your boss needs educating in this then simply show him Actinic sites which are at No.1 on the SERPS.

I never mentioned stripping out any code... If you think that a site which has most pages containing over 100 errors and 100 warnings using a w3c validator is natural then I think you are mistaken as to what the basics are.

How will bots crawl through pages which don't make sense?
What is the point of making changes if this won't happen?
How will Google index my site like you mentioned earlier with the above in mind?

When I started work on the site it didn't even have meta tags or proper titles, it's keyword density was very poor, the actinic sitemap crashes your browser, the page names were something like 'copy_of_copy_of....', the link structure would force a bot out or to stop spidering our site.
The site has less than 200 pages in Google when over 13000 exist!
Why I am the only person who thinks that isn't right on this thread? What 'basics' are you referring to that I haven't mentioned?

I don't fight or play with metatags, I improve and optimize them and despite what many think, they are important to a certain extent. I doubt there are many v7 sites that are top of the SERP's 'out of the box', any links? The humble pie is waiting...

I appreciate any positive advice for the topic I asked about... I'd just like to remind everyone telling me how to do things their way to have a look at MY first post, I simply asked if moving 1 line of text 4 lines lower would have a detrimental change to how actinic operates, not for their version of how to be an actinic hero - every site is different.

Our products sell very well indeed through various marketing efforts and promotions - I just want to increase the visibility of our website, which has a wealth of content currently unseen to many.
