Redeeming Coupons with greater value than the order total

If I try to use a coupon with a fixed discount value of say £20 against a purchase of £19.95 then I get a shipping error - I think because the total due goes negative. (And shipping thresholds are not allowed less than zero)

Is it possible to redeem coupons against orders of less value?

I do not get the error you mentiion when I try it here, It just deducts the value and continues on to checkout. What did you do to be able to replicate this problem.

        Kind regards,

This is the error when I redeem a coupon of value £50 against an order of less than that.

But first I think I need to sort out how to apply the discount I want properly - I can't seem to get it to work right:
What I want is to have a coupon that will discount the total order value by say £50. If the total value of the order is less than £50 then I want to know what will happen - this is where I get the shipping problem.

            Duncan,

This looks like more to do with the shipping setup than anything else. Do you have "Dont Allow Excess" selected in the Shipping & Handling tab? Please change to "Take the highest Value in table", apply and update the site. Let us know if it has worked.

I did have Don't Aallow Excess checked. (changed it to Highest)

** But - I still can't figure out how to configure a discount to do what I want.
How do I setup a coupon that will discount the total order value by a fixed value of say £50? Whenever I try I get a discount of the Trigger Value!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this one. What do you mean by trigge value? Say I have a coupon code that is worth £50 and apply this code on an order that is £25, it zero's out the amount. But will reduce £50 if the order is say £60 and charge me £10. If you can be a bit more specific, I may be able to help you further.

                Kind regards,

Create a discount with the trigger as 'quantity' and set that trigger to 1. This should then work. I am assuming that you are using one of the other mothods from the first dropdown menu.
