    Multiuser over a VPN

Is anyone running Actinic Multiuser over a VPN? Our office is in one building and our shipping is handled from another location. Ideally, I would like to set up a VPN between the two sites and run Multiuser. However, there may be an issue with latency.

One possible alternative maybe to use a sharepoint server hosted on the internet and map a drive to that. This would cut out the VPN overhead and provide more diverse routing but may introduce more issues.

The third alternative would be to use Citrix or GoToMyPC. If I went down this route, I would prefer a proper Citrix solution as I could lock it down more securely than GoToMyPC.

Has anyone played around with any of these options?

Cheers & Merry Christmas to all

    Hi,

I'm afraid that we are running on a skeleton team this week so I can't answer this question straight away for you. I have asked our development team if anyone can comment on it but I'm not sure if we have any multiuser experts around at the moment.

      Hi,

I have been informed that we have tested multiuser on a VPN and found it to be awful as Jet Access transfers the data between the remote and local system thus incurring delays which increase as database content increases. So we would not recommend using mutiuser over a VPN.

The Citrix solution would work but probably be very expensive. An alternative and free option would be VNC.

        Hi Tracy,

I have been playing around with this over the last couple of days and can confirm that using a VPN between two ADSL routers and then using VNC to take over the main machine actually works extremely well.

I have a couple of Netgear routers with a VPN set up between them and Real VNC installed on the main machine running single user Actinic Developer and some of Jan's Mole End utilities. Both the standard client and the Java client work well. The only problem I had was with NAT on the routers but with some fiddling I managed to get it all working.

We can now take over our (single user Actinic Developer) machine from both our offices - exactly what we wanted to do. Latency and time lags don't seem to be a problem and images load and screens refresh really quickly. All in all - a result!

        Cheers

          Hi Mik

Any chance of explaining how you resolved the NAT problems on the routers?
