Website building confusion

Hia guys, i'm setting about creating a new layout for my site but i don't really want to use any of the templates provided. When selected a fresh layout i'm pretty much stuck from here on. I can get my head round most html but actinic i find is extremely confusing. Several of your websites have been crafted extremely well, i'v just got a few questions on the basics. First of all, how do i create a footer for the website which will be seen on every page ie. 'Copyright myname 2005, for terms and conditions click here'.

Next there is the catalog on the left hand side and search on the right. If i wanted to add extra links to these sidebars could i do so? For example in the left sidebar have 'home','about us' etc, and then BELOW that, have a seperate box with the catalog tree inside. An example is on http://www.hobuk.co.uk/ where there is 'store sections' and then 'cards accepted'. Can i realistically do this?

You can do almost anything by modiying the right templates. The main template to modify would be Act_Primary.html. Play around with it litlle by little, previewing frequently (make a backup first). Once you get your head around how it comes together you'll find it easier.
