Removes sales tax from a component

When we sell a pair of pants with hemming charges (as a component) in our state, I need to be able to charge sales tax on the pants but NOT the hemming service.

How can I remove tax charges from a component?

As a component alone you will not be able to do this but you can create a hidden product for the hemming service and on the details tab of this product select the appropriate tax treatment. You can then associate the hidden product to the component using the 'Associated Product' dropdown and select 'Use associated Product Prices' and 'Use Associated product Tax'. This should sort the problem for you.
